Dr. John J. O’Malley, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Scranton, brings a bundle of energy, talent, expertise and passion to youth, high school and college sports.  Professor O’Malley combines his academic preparation in philosophy and experimental psychology, a lifetime commitment to coaching baseball, basketball, softball and even gymnastics, over twenty-five years of teaching exercise & sport psychology and coaching principles, as well as an extraordinary engagement in Northeast PA’s premier  interscholastic and youth coach training effort, the Bochicchio Sport Character Initiative, to bring an unparalleled perspective to the vital and impactful role of volunteer youth coaches.

Though Dr. O’Malley’s selfless love and passion for sports and service are inherently altruistic,  O’Malley has received numerous awards, including the Frank O’Hara Award (the highest award given by The University and its Alumni Society), lifetime achievement recognition by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association for his leadership and special contributions to interscholastic athletics in the area of coaching education (highest award presented by PSADA), named a national “Sports Ethics Fellow” by the Institute for International Sport  in recognition of his work promoting sportsmanship (the honor is “aimed primarily at recognizing distinguished individuals who have moved the cause of fair play forward in American society”), designation by the Positive Coaching Alliance as a “Champion” recognizing his efforts to promote positive coaching at the grass roots level and induction into the Northeast Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of exemplary service to youth and high school sports.

Not an unfamiliar story, and underscoring the extraordinary role that youth sports coaches play in the development of young men and woman, Professor O’Malley credits his North Scranton Junior High basketball coach with igniting  the fire of his lifetime of love and commitment to service.
